How to become a Chief Listening Officer?
As a business owner, I know that it’s not easy to sell and market your product or services. We can’t also succeed in these things without listening to what’s really happening outside our business and how our audiences think about the business. Today, we’re going to talk about how to become an effective listener. Not just Marketing but also listening to what are your audience thinks of your business. Google Alert, as you have heard about it, has a lot of listening tools out there.
I’m going to give you #3 THREE SPECIFIC PIECE OF ADVICE that will help you to become a Chief Listening Officer:
- DELETE. DELETE AND DELETE! – The first thing you have to do is to delete all your alerts. Get rid of them right now, we’re going to go back and start again. Right now Google is a little different, you could either be logged into a Gmail account or you can be logged out and just have those alerts sent directly to your current email address.
- AIR QUOTES – make sure to use quotes, air quotes around any phrase that you want to keep your ear on the ground. Like literally laying on the ground with you hearing “What are people saying about me?” Google alerts will let you put your name in there, it’ll let you put any proprietary products.
- FOLLOWING CLIENTS – If you have clients that you were working with, you want to be in the know about what’s happening with their business. Google Alerts can help you keep up with your clients.
A bonus tip that I can let you have, and this is really important: take a section of copy from the homepage of your website, like a little paragraph from your website. Then Google Alert will tell you when someone has taken a piece of content off your website. My website has been stolen 6 to 7 times, I lost track. So I take a little piece of copy off my home page. I copy and paste it and I pop it in a Google Alert with quotes. Now, if anyone takes my stuff, I am going to be alerted that they took my exact stuff.
Google Alerts is a great way to keep your ear to the ground. Make sure that you’re protecting your brand assets online. Your reputation is everything online. And I wanted to look the very best it can be.
